Ideas for a Masterseminar?
Mr H said we should approach the dept with our suggestions for a seminar aimed at Master students. I think this is a good idea as it does present us with a possibility to have another class together next summer and I think we should do it. What are the ideas for topics? Someone mentioned conspiracy theories and I know a lot of us want to do media and popular culture. I wouldn't mind something on news dissemination (modern journalism and news programs) or the use of imagery in today's world.

ReplyDeleteDo you want that wrapped? Advertising and myth, ideas, tropes etc.how various contexts have changed etc.

Someday my prince will come- dissecting chick lit and movies today...why are they so popular, are they being subverted from within in both directions (naturally blonde vs bridget jones) and what does that say about women and how we are percieved.
Lost- reality tv and the search for identity through voyeurism and consumer values.
from zero to hero...looking at the revolution in the queer since the 1960s in art,lit and film, discussing similar movements in other groups, predicting future development, looking into sterotyping neg. and pos.

ReplyDeleteand what about:
mediated cultures ala mike wesch, the anthropology of you tube project..
and:
TMI (too much information)blogs and personal disclosure my life my url in contrast to the 19th century journal/diary idea.(another title:dear diary...)could be combined with lost idea, personal info open disclosure etc in internet cultures.
Behind closed doors..prison narratives and heterotopias (gramsci, negri, shawshank redemption, foucoult)
As I lay dying..
living and dying on the world wide web- euth. and dying as well as living in internet communities...randy pausch, various very sick people using the web to raise awareness/give full disclosure etc, as well as every minute detail in web communities.also public grief..diana etc.
i like the internet media ones (internet communities etc), or the advertising idea... that would be cool...anything to do with Myth and identity and changes in society over the last 50 years as reflected in pop/mass culture
ReplyDeleteHmmm, that's a lot of good ideas. I think you'd need a masters seminar for each. Maybe it'd be best to list them all and have a vote?
ReplyDeleteUnless everyone is agreed on an Internet/Media Studies/You Tube seminar, which I would be.
Seriously, I'd take all of them... I think we don't even have to vote on them since the ideas we have now won't be realized until the next Winter Term. And I think that if we hand in a wide range of topics we'd be interested in our professor(s) will have more to choose from. I mean, in the end they're the ones to decide whether they want to work on it or not.
ReplyDeleteExactly. let's narrow it down to a shorter list of favourite topics and hand that in (i.e. SOONiSH so they can start planning for the winter semester NOW). that way the English dept can look around and see who could teach what.
ReplyDeleteI like the following topics:
1. Youtube/internet/networking/blogs
2. Advertising and Myth
3. Conspiracy Theories
4. Sensationalist journalism (why we need so much BREAKING NEWS)
5. Endings (happy endings, sad endings, depressing endings..what are films trying to say about the world?)
Any other suggestions?
Oh oh oh and on the youtube topic...how applications like that allow ANYONE to express themselves and become famous....you don't have to be rich or anything, just creative. What does this say about us all as actors, as contributors to the cultural field (where consecration depends on people passing it on, as opposed to getting published etc).
ReplyDeleteWhat anna says is right, the more ideas we have the better, as they have more to work with.
ReplyDeleteHence let's make a list of favourite topics...well anyway you have my votes:) Any other ideas, ppl?
